Spot lots of shooting stars

The night of August 12th to 13th is going to be spectacular! The Perseid meteor shower reaches its peak that night, giving you the chance to see plenty of 'shooting stars'.

Viewing tips

Conditions are a bit challenging this year. Since the full moon occurred on August 9th, there is a lot of interfering moonlight, which will make it difficult to see the fainter meteors.

Fortunately, if the sky is clear, you can still expect to see 13 to 21 meteors per hour. We recommend watching the Perseids from a location with as little light pollution as possible. The darker, the better!

What is a shooting star?

Did you know that shooting stars aren't actually stars at all? They are pieces of space debris (meteoroids) entering our atmosphere. As these small rocks heat up rapidly and burn, they create a bright streak of light. This trail of light is called a meteor.

The Perseids are fast meteors that often leave a glowing trail behind. They originate from dust and rock particles left behind by the comet Swift-Tuttle in its orbit around the sun.
