Gibeon meteorite auctioned for 1.7 million euros

The big day arrived on Saturday, August 30th. The Gibeon meteorite, which had been on display at Space Expo in Noordwijk throughout the summer holidays, went under the hammer. The remarkable object sold for 1.7 million euros, with the proceeds benefiting the Mercurius Observatory in Dordrecht.

The final price far exceeded all expectations. It was initially estimated that the object would fetch between 800,000 and 1 million euros, so the result was significantly higher. The auction was conducted by Hessink's International Fine Art Auctioneers and won by an American bidder. It is not yet known what they plan to do with the meteorite.

Space Expo exhibited the object to the public during the summer months, an opportunity that thousands of people took advantage of.
