Who was Wubbo Ockels?
Wubbo Ockels wore this flight suit during training and his space mission. From October 31 to November 6, 1985, Wubbo flew into space aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger. During the flight and his stay in Spacelab, he served as a payload specialist, co-responsible for the scientific experiments. This made him the first Dutch person in space.
What is Spacelab?
Spacelab was a scientific laboratory placed in the cargo bay of the American space shuttle. Developed by the ESA, it allowed astronauts to conduct experiments in zero gravity.

Wubbo Ockels became the first Dutch astronaut in space during this mission. The mission centered on the European Spacelab D1 laboratory, in which 76 scientific experiments were conducted. (Credits: ESA)

During this space mission, the Challenger completed 112 orbits around the Earth, and the crew traveled over 4.6 million kilometers.

Space Expo has several space suits and flight suits belonging to Wubbo Ockels in its collection, in various colors. The blue flight suit was worn as the official uniform during the mission, while the orange flight suit was used during training.
