Exposition

All about space

Space Expo is Europe’s first permanent space exhibition. Space Expo is also the official visitors centre for ESA in the Netherlands, the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) which is located in Noordwijk. ESTEC is the largest site and the technical heart of ESA.

In our exhibition you can see models of rockets and many real satellites, that are identical with the satellites that are in space. Our Russian spying satellite, the Resurs, has truly been in space for weeks in 1988 and you can see the damage its journey brought him. Space Expo shows a scale model of the complete International Space Station, and at full size the Russian living module Zvezda and the European laboratory Columbus, in which you can walk around. We tell you all about the European Space Agency and their activities, we pay attention to the galaxies and all the highlights in the history of spaceflight, with of course the landing on the Moon by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin.

Indispensable in our space exhibition is the real Soyuz spacecraft that brought our Dutch astronaut André Kuipers and his crewmembers Oleg Kononenko and Don Pettit to the International Space Station in 2011. This Soyuz TMA-03M capsule also brought them back to Earth in 2012, and since September 2016 our visitors can see this special spacecraft from less than 1 m distance. In our simulator of the Soyuz rocket, you can experience a launch, the docking to the International Space Station and the landing back on Earth.

  • See what it was like for the first men on the Moon.
  • Experience the simulated launch of an Ariane rocket ‘live’.
  • Discover the world of satellites with the test models of European space missions.
  • Find out all about astronauts and see how they live and work in space.
