In January 2025, Space Expo's exhibition on the European Robotic Arm (ERA) opened!
What is the ERA?
Astronauts spend about 30% of their working time in space on maintenance and repairs of the International Space Station (ISS). This is extremely important, as the station is exposed to extreme temperature changes, radiation, (micro)meteorites, and space debris! Astronauts regularly go on spacewalks to repair, install, or replace parts. The European Robotic Arm (ERA) assists astronauts with this work.
The robotic arm ERA is over 11 meters long and weighs 630 kilograms. Like a crane, the arm can move heavy loads. But astronauts also use ERA as a kind of aerial work platform, with the robot moving the astronaut across the ISS. Additionally, the arm can carry out inspection tasks using four cameras.
Astronauts can control the arm manually, but ERA can also operate autonomously using pre-programmed instructions.
The largest Dutch space project
ERA plays a crucial role in the ISS and in ensuring astronaut safety. And we can be proud, because it is primarily a Dutch project. In fact, it is the largest Dutch space project ever!
Discover ERA at Space Expo!
Of course, the ERA cannot be missing from the Netherlands’ space museum! Space Expo’s impressive exhibition includes:
- The 11-meter-long ERA test model
- A large wall print
- Fascinating interviews with experts and video footage of the arm
Come admire the permanent exhibition now at Space Expo!
